A Brief History
Saiva Siddhanta Mandram's birth in Malaysia dates back to 1976. It started with the initiative and heroic efforts of Thondar Thilagam Sri.N.Thiruvasagam, with his initial involvement in Siddhanta activities with like-minded friends and well-wishers with his contact and association with his holiness Sivaya Subramuniya Swami of Hawai, USA. The year 1976 saw the establishment of the SSM in Malaysia. Sri.Nadarajah, Sri.Subramaniam, Sri. Pararajasingam, Sri. Raman and Sri. Balasubramaniam were equally interested in associating themselves with Sri N. Thiruvasagam, in his quest for the establishment of the SSM in Malayisa.
The next milestone was seen through the active involvement of the members with Gurudeve Sivaya Subramuniya Swami of Hawaii. During his visits to this country, the members distributed free pamphlets and brochures to all Hindus in the country. "Lord Ganesha - The Benevolent Deity for the Modern Hindu" was the first Hindu publication released in Kuala Lumpur on 13th August 1980. More people in this country began to inquire about Gurudeve and his publications. These activities greatly inspired, encouraged and motivated Sri N.Thiruvasagam to form an organisation for Hindus in Malayisa. The selection and bestowing of an appropriate name for the organisation created much debate among the Hindus, and finally an organisation called the Saiva Siddhanta Mandram was born.
